Description & Benefits - Highly-Effective Chloramine Reduction w/ Premium Touch Screen Control Valve
ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filters premium choice for the removal chloramine, chlorine, disinfection by-products including trihalomethanes (THMs), bad tastes and odors, and a wide range of organic contaminants. Featuring advanced color LCD touch screen controller.
ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filters deliver refreshing clean water to every faucet in your home. They also protect your skin and hair from the damaging effects of chlorine.
While ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filters are most often used to treat city water treated with chloramines, they can also be used to treat well water, rainwater, and surface water (lakes, streams, and rivers) that are microbiologically safe. They are a great solution for general taste and odor problems, and have a higher capacity for the removal of natural organic matter than standard carbon filters. A UV sterilizer should be installed after the ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Filter if it is used on a water source with uncertain microbiological quality. While Centaur catalytic carbon is often recommended for the removal of hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg) odor, there are longer-lasting solutions available for this particular problem - see hydrogen sulfide solutions here.
We use only the original Centaur-brand catalytic carbon from the market leader, Calgon®. Others have tried to copy its effectiveness, but nothing outperforms the original! It is NSF/ANSI Standard 61 validated for your assurance of its purity and safety, and it's made in the USA! Ask our competitors where they get their carbon...

ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filter systems are designed to backwash periodically to eject trapped sediment and particulates and to prevent channeling that could reduce system performance. Accordingly, the control valve is connected to a drain, and the backwash water (together with the rejected contaminants) is simply discharged to the drain during the backwash process. The backwash process is usually done once per week and is controlled by the premium-grade Fleck 5800 XTR2 digital control valve with color LCD touch screen display for easy programming and data access. The process is generally programmed to occur in the middle of the night when you are not likely to be using any water, but can be adjusted to suit your water usage habits if required. In a typical residential application, the carbon media should be replaced approximately every 5 years to maintain optimal performance.
The Chloramine Challenge / Problem...
Chloramine is a disinfectant used by many cities and water districts to sterilize water. It is an alternative to chlorine. The use of chloramine has increased dramatically in recent years due in large part to the fact that it maintains its sterilization capacity longer (less likely than chlorine to degrade or dissipate - it is more stable), and it is less likely to form harmful disinfection by-products like trihalomethanes. It is estimated that close to 30% of municipal water treatment plants now use chloramine instead of chlorine.
Chemically, chloramine is a formed by mixing chlorine and ammonia; however, chloramines actually exist in several different states within treated drinking water, so they are commonly just referred to as "chloramines." Chloramines are weaker disinfectants than free chlorine. Accordingly, larger quantities are often required to achieve the same sterilization effect. There is widespread concern that chloramine, like chlorine, is toxic and could have similar adverse health effects. For this reason, chloramine use is closely regulated. However, a growing number of scientists and health practitioners are sounding the alarm about ingesting even low levels of chlorine and chloramine and showering/bathing in chlorinated or chloramine-treated water.
The problem with chloramines is that, unlike chlorine, they are not adequately removed by traditional activated carbon filters. It is not that standard carbon filters are incapable of removing chloramine, but the contact time required is typically far more than is provided for in most standard residential systems. Specialized catalytic carbon reduces the contact time necessary for satisfactory removal, making it a more practical choice for chloramine treatment. ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filters are designed specifically for chloramine removal (but they also make great chlorine filters too!).
How ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filters Work
The heart of our ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filter systems is their catalytic granular activated carbon (GAC) media. Carbon has a long history of being used to absorb impurities, and is perhaps the most powerful absorbent known to man. One pound of carbon contains a surface area of roughly 125 acres and can absorb literally thousands of different chemicals. However, as you might expect, not all activated carbon is created equal, nor are all carbons equally effective in removing contaminants from water. Their effectiveness is determined by the size of the carbon granules, the source of the carbon, its purity, the process by which it was made, and of course, how it is applied. The removal of chloramines, which are composed of both chlorine and ammonia, is greatly enhanced when highly specialized catalytically-activated carbon is used.
We use only the very best brand-name, NSF/ANSI Standard 61 validated, virgin Centaur catalytic carbon from Calgon®. It is made in the USA! Ask our competitors where they get their carbon.... Often imitated, but never equalled, Calgon® Centaur is the original and market-leading catalytic carbon that others strive to match.
Calgon®'s Centaur catalytic granular activated carbon (GAC) is a bitumous coal derived carbon that has been manufactured to exhibit catalytic functionality for enhanced removal of chlormines and hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
The removal of contaminants by granular activated carbon occurs as a result of:
Catalytic Reduction - Upon contact with catalytically activated carbon, the chloramine bonds between chlorine and ammonia are broken and chlorine is catalytically reduced to harmless chloride ions. This process is very rapid and does not use up the capacity of the carbon, thereby leaving it free for the removal of other contaminants and allowing for a very long filter life.
Adsorption - Organic contaminants that cause bad taste and odors, along with most chemical contaminants, are adsorbed onto the media surface as a result of an electro-chemical attraction. As noted above, activated carbon has a massive surface area available for adsorption.
Mechanical Filtration - Particulates, dirt, and sediment get physically removed from the water since they can't fit through the spaces between the granules. Filtration down to a level of about 30-50 microns is generally possible.
The water flow path through our ClearPlus™ Ultimate Series Centaur Catalytic Carbon Filter systems is downflow. This provides optimal filtration. ClearPlus systems are designed to backwash periodically to eject trapped sediment and particulates, so there are no filters to replace. This process also prevents channeling within the media bed that could reduce system performance over time. The backwash function is completely automated and controlled by the premium-grade Fleck 5800 control valve - the "brains" of the system. The control valve, which features a large color LCD touch screen, is connected to a drain and the backwash water together with the rejected sediments are simply discharged to the drain during the backwash process. The backwash is generally programmed to occur in the middle of the night when you are not likely to be using any water, but can be adjusted to suit your water usage habits if required.
The carbon media has a long service life, generally about 5 years. It can be replaced in about half an hour without any plumbing knowledge or special experience - anyone can do it. There is no need to replace filter cartridges every few months, saving you time and money!
