* If your pH is less than 6.5, we recommend pH correction to prevent corrosion and to boost performance of your iron filter

**Satisfactory removal or low levels of manganese (under 1 ppm) with Birm® and Katalox Light® can generally be achieved where the pH is between 8.0 and 9.0, and where the iron to manganese ratio is 10:1 or higher. In most cases, we recommend the use of Filox media for manganese reduction due to its more powerful catalytic properties.

Description & Benefits

Iron Rival Series whole house filters are offered with 3 media options: Birm® (Good), Katalox Light® (Better), and Filox (Best). See our Compare Models tab to determine the best choice for your application.

Filox is both our most popular and our most powerful media option. It is capable of removing high levels of iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor). It is extremely long-lasting since it is a solid media (not coated). It can last almost indefinitely if backwashed properly. Since it is such a powerful catalyst, smaller systems can generally be used to achieve the same treatment goals, and it performs better than other media in the removal of stubborn manganese.

Filox is a relatively heavy media so it is important to ensure that your well and pressure system can support the backwash needs of your selected model. If in doubt, please contact one of our Certified Water Technicians toll free at 1-866-376-2690 for assistance.

The Iron Rival is available with your choice of 2 great controller options:

All Iron Rival systems are designed to backwash periodically to eject trapped sediment and particulates. Accordingly, the control valve is connected to a drain and the backwash water together with the rejected contaminants are simply discharged to the drain during the backwash process. The backwash is controlled by the robust and time-proven Fleck 5800 digital control valve, and is generally programmed to occur in the middle of the night (fully adjustable) when you are not likely to be using any water. In a typical residential application, the Filox media will be backwashed daily. In most applications, Filox will last indefintiely if properly backwashed.

How Iron Rival™ Whole House Filters Work - Chemical Free Iron Treatment

How Iron Rival Works

Oxidation followed by filtration is the most effective means of iron treatment - the method has been around for decades in one form or another. The oxidation of iron can be done in many ways; however, it is most frequently initiated by a chemical oxidant such as chlorine, hydrogen peroxide, or permanganate, or through an air injection pump or venturi. Chemical oxidants are a nuisance to set-up, monitor, and maintain, and often require additional equipment to treat new problems posed by the introduction of the chemicals to the water. The use of air injection pumps or a venturi requires additional costly equipment, require longer contact times (bulkier equipment), and have proven ineffective at the lower flow rates typically found in most residential settings.

Iron Rival Series Filters use a unique air injection oxidizer technology that overcomes all of these shortcomings. The result is the industry's most effective chemical-free treatment system for iron. And, not only is it highly effective, it is affordable, easy to install and operate, and requires very little maintenance!

Water first enters the system where it is distributed into the top of the treatment tank by a unique diffuser. The top of the tank contains a pressurized head of air sometimes referred to as a "captive air charge" which immediately begins to oxidize dissolved iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. The captive air charge also dramatically increases the dissolved oxygen content of the water to prepare for the next stage of treatment.

The water then reaches the treatment tank's bed of Filox catalyst media. Filox rapidly accelerates the combination of the dissolved contaminants and the oxygen, resulting in the formation of oxidized particles (primarily iron hydroxide, insoluble forms of manganese, and sulfur precipitates). These particles quickly grow in size and become trapped within the media bed. By the time the water reaches the bottom of the treatment tank, it is virtually free of any iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide. A support bed of gravel ensures even water flow through the media bed.

Periodically, the digital control valve will automatically backwash and regenerate the system without any intervention required. This process is pre-programmed at our factory to occur at specific intervals based on your water conditions and media selected - it is normally set to occur daily for Filox media. The regeneration is typically scheduled to occur at night when water is unlikely to be in use for maximum convenience. No chemicals or salt are required. During regeneration, the remaining captive air charge is purged, the catalyst media is backwashed to send the oxidized particles down the drain, and the chamber of air is replenished.

Since the media within the filter acts only as a catalyst, it is not used up in the treatment process. Accordingly, there are no filters to replace, no chemicals to add, no venturi systems or pumps to maintain, etc.!

The Filox media has a long service life. If backwashed properly, it can last indefinitely. However, if it ever needs to be replaced, it can be done in about half an hour without any plumbing knowledge or special experience - anyone can do it. There is no need to replace filter cartridges every few months, saving you time and money.

The result is clean, clear water at every faucet - no more unsightly iron stains!

More about Filox

Watts' Alamo brand Filox is an extremely powerful iron removal media. It is an excellent choice for where very high levels of contaminants are present.

Like most iron removal medias, Filox acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between dissolved oxygen and the iron compounds to form ferric hydroxide which is then removed through mechanical filtration in the media bed. As a catalyst, Filox is not consumed in the iron removal process and it does not need to be regenerated. Also like most other iron removal media, the active ingredient in Filox is manganese dioxide.

Filox is a natural ore that is composed of 75 to 85% manganese dioxide, giving it dramatically more active ingredient than almost all other iron removal media. As a solid media, as opposed to a coated media, it is not subject to performance loss due to mechanical wear on the outer layers of the granules caused by the backwash process. Accordingly, Filox has a near indefinite life in all but the most severe treatment conditions. Treatment of up to 15 ppm (mg/l) iron, 7 ppm (mg/l) hydrogen sulfide, and 3 ppm (mg/l) manganese is possible in a well designed system (even higher levels can be treated with pre-oxidation with air, chlorine, hydrogen peroxide or other oxidant).

As a solid media, Filox is significantly heavier than other iron removal media (about 114 lbs per cubic foot). Accordingly, it requires a more frequent backwash (daily recommended) and higher backwash flow rates. Consideration should be given to the well's water yield to ensure that sufficient water is available for backwash. Some water treatment dealers dismiss Filox due to its weight but ignore the fact that due to its potency, higher service flow rates can be achieved with smaller treatment tanks and less media volume. This helps counteract the backwash flow rate requirements as the backwash rate is directly related to tank diameter. In our experience, an 8" diameter tank with 0.5 cubic feet of Filox will perform as well or better than a 10" tank with twice as much Birm® for instance, and will have similar backwash flow rate.

Arsenic Removal with Filox

Iron Rival systems with Filox media may be used to remove, or assist in the removal, of arsenic.

Since most arsenic removal medias are negatively impacted by iron and manganese, the choice of a good iron pre-filter is critical to the performance of your arsenic treatment. Filox has several advantages over other media options as a pre-treatment for arsenic. Firstly, Filox will convert trivalent arsenic to pentavalent arsenic to enhance removal at subsequent treatment steps. Secondly, indirect removal of arsenic will occur through a process called co-precipitation where arsenic is adsorbed to the ferric hydroxide particles created during iron removal. In many cases, near complete arsenic removal is possible where the raw water iron level is at least 20 times higher than the arsenic level. In cases where this ratio of iron to arsenic does not exist, the reduction in arsenic through co-precipitation enhances the life of the arsenic treatment media. Direct adsorption of arsenic to the Filox media also occurs for the first few months of operation, thereby further enhancing arsenic removal performance.

As in all cases of arsenic treatment, follow-up testing should be done to confirm satisfactory arsenic reduction.

Compare Available Models (Media Options)

Iron Rival Series filters are offered with 3 media options: Birm® (Good), Katalox Light® (Better), and Filox (Best).

Birm®

Our Birm® media option is highly cost-effective, and requires less backwash flow rate, volume, and frequency as compared to the other options. It is recommended for iron removal applications up to 3 ppm (mg/l), particularly when manganese and hydrogen sulfide are not present. A pH range of 6.8 to 9.0 is required.

Katalox Light®

Katalox Light® is a more powerful catalyst than Birm® and it is a higher tollerence of other oxidizers such as chlorine. It has a much higher percentage of active ingredient so it works faster, can treat more severe iron problems, and lasts longer. Similar to Birm®, we find that Katalox Light® performs best for manganese reduction when the pH is higher than 8.0. It is generally very effective at eliminating low to moderate levels of hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor). That said, given the similar cost, we generally recommend the Filox option for applications involving the removal of manganese and hydrogen sulfide. It's relatively light weight and potency make it a good choice for low yield wells that might not be able to meet the backwash flow rate requirements of a Filox filter.

Filox     Most Popular Choice

Filox is the most potent media option and is our recommended solution for most iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide treatment applications. Unlike Birm® and Katalox Light®, Filox is not a coated media. It is a solid media composed primarily of the active ingredient. This makes it very resistent to other oxidizers like chlorine and peroxide, and gives it an almost indefinite life when backwashed properly. It has the broadest effective pH range, can treat the highest levels of iron, and easily handles relatively high levels of manganese and hydrogen sulfide without harm to the media. The biggest drawbacks of Filox are that it is a little bit more expensive per cubic foot (this is countered by its potency which generally permits the use of less media to do the same job), and the fact that it is relatively heavy. As a result of its weight, it requires a higher backwash flow rate and should also be backwashed more frequently.

    Optimal service flow rates are based on good performance up to about 7 ppm iron and at a pH of 7.5. Reduce service flow rate expectations slightly if your pH is lower or if your iron level is higher especially if concurrent manganese reduction is also an objective. Satisfactory performance can generally be achieved up to the maximum recommended flow rate under most conditions.

    Works as advertiused5 Stars
    I bought the IronRival w/Filox quite a while back. I don't believe in doing reviews 30, 60, or 90 days after purchase no matter how much the seller pesters me. The product needs to prove itself to me by dependably functioning and meeting all sales promises. Installation and setup was fairly easy and straight forward. Rearranging some original plumbing did offer a couple challenges but handled easily. My well water is very good to begin with. The unit was installed to remove the nasty hydrogen sulfide smell. It's performance has been exceptional. Not even a hint of the H2S is present. It's now been a little over a year since installation and I am totally satisfied with my purchase. Thank you, - Dan Novak

    Simply amazing!!! We had iron stains everywhere from Shower to Sinks to Laundry. The Iron Rival w/Filox cleared it up perfectly. Glad a friend of mine who is a water specialist suggested this system. - James Schumacher
    Wise Choice 5 Stars
    We decided to buy this Unit after getting tired of seeing the Iron and our Green Sand Filter just wasn't doing it's job. After doing some research we decided to purchase this unit . the only mistake I made installing it , I didn't run it thru the backwash cycle first . The residue cleared up in about an hour Iron gone ! The one family member said the water taste better then bottle water from the store . I just can't wait to test the water now to see what the results are. Thanks Tanner! - Tom & Rita
    No more scum ring in the bathtub!5 Stars
    We have about 9 ppm of iron in our well water, which makes lots of red rust in the system. This iron filter removes it all--no more scum ring in the bathtub! The filter came fast, was easy to install, and had very good directions included. So far, and it's been working for a couple of months now, it's much better than the old greensand filter we used for many years. Also, the price was better than we could get locally for the same filter; the shipping was included. If it continues the good work, I would highly recommend it, at least for iron which was our only problem. - Randal
    AWESOME!!5 Stars
    We had a horrible problem with iron in our water.... it would come out of the tap looking like tea water! We even had a whole-house water treatment system and it still looked & tasted horrible! We installed the Iron Rival w/Filox system and within minutes we had crystal clear water!! No more discolored toilets, or drinking water!!!! Well worth the money!!! - Richard
    Filox Iron Rival5 Stars
    I purchased the 0.5 cu.ft. filox filter with AIO. I also asked for a vortech tank, which the company was able to accomodate (slight upcharge). To provide a little context: my water has 2 ppm iron (mostly ferric already), 0.1 ppm manganese, pH 7.0, ORP around +200, and I backwash every 2 days. I was worried I undersized this filter because I live in a larger home, with 4 adults, but it has handled everything well, and supplies the necessary/expected service flow rate without any noticeable pressure drop. Make sure you can meet or exceed the recommended backwash flow rate. This was the biggest deciding factor for me sizing the filter. Overall, this filter and the customer service has been nothing short of phenomenal--special shout out to Grant R., who helped me every step of the way. Seriously, I can't thank him enoug - Nikola Filajdic

    I have well water that has lots of iron and the water smells of rotten eggs. My son in law's father mentioned he had a system that took care of his problems. He found the system on line for me. I bought it and gave it to my plumber to install. He was not familiar with it but he took the install directions and said he would put the system in. Within two days after the install there was a visible difference in the smell and no more iron stains in the sink or toilets. On my second month and I am totally pleased. After having been quoted a ridiculous price to remove the sulfur smell from my cabins well water supply, I stumbled across this filter. After getting an airline reward voucher for getting off of the plane to a destination that I was heading to, I used that money that they gave me, to finally purchase this water filtration system. It has done the job! I paid A professional to install it. And it has gotten rid of 99% of the sulfur smell. Sometimes, I will smell a little bit after the water has not been turned on for a few days. Only initially though. It has been approximately two months, and so far so good! I was really worried if it could handle it. It has! Great product. Fair price. - Doc Sab

    So Product aside, the route to obtaining it was most frustrating with lots of excuses as to why the product was sitting with their shipper for weeks, and in the end, instead of being delivered, I had to take a day off work and retrieve from a local shipping agent. I would have taken care of shipping myself. Now, the unit itself seems to work well in the iron/manganese and H2S removal, but the automatic backflush is so loud that there is no place in our 4700 square foot building that we cannot be jolted awake as it does two cycles of this at around midnight. Unless you can find well sound-insulated area to install this, this feature is most unpleasant. This filter DOES what it is supposed to, but the noise has me looking at other options. - Ian H.

    I ordered 3 of these system and installed my self at our family cottages in Sauble Beach Ontario. I am a Nurse Practitioner not a professional plumber and I was able to do it my self without any problems. The interaction with Sara Dubetz at homeplusproductswas superb. Delivery across the country was in time. No parts were missing. The water is not yellow and it does not smell as sulph anymore. Just read and follow the instruction to a T and you will be ok. I hope they will last more than 10 years as advertised. I am planing to buy 2 more systems for my other 2 family members cottages if the Black Friday deals will be offered again this year. - Rick Radu

    Very knowledgeable and helpful personal and they actually saved me money, we had slightly elevated levels of arsenic with very high iron, they suggested using this filter as arsenic attaches to iron, after two weeks had the water tested and the iron and arsenic along with other items where gone, also we used to get a white calcium buildup on our ice maker, that is also gone. I installed the unit myself and was very easy for me, if your not handy hire a plumber. The IronRival is a Big Win and well worth the price - Thomas Brown

    I recently purchased an Iron Filter from these people Iron Rival with Filox , it really worked well , nothing to add !It went from 1.4 to hardly nothing ! I liked dealing with these people so much . I decided to replace my old water softener with a new one from them . The sales people were very knowledgeable and didn't try to over sell me something I really didn't need . Just what they thought suited my needs . I installed everything myself with really no problems . System works great , good bye iron and good bye hard water !!! - Thomas & Rita ( Ohio )

    HomePlus Iron Rival Whole House Filters with Filox Media Customer Questions & Answers

    Question:Does iron rival w/filox also remove sediment? We currently have two Big Blue filters in line, one @ 100 microns and one at 50 microns and change them out every 9 months.
    Answer(s):

    Yes, it certainly does. Filox makes an excellent sediment filter media. It is capable of filtering down into the 5-10 micron range. It will have no problem removing the sediments that you are currently removing using your 50 and 100 micron cartridge filters, while at the same time treating iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide.

    Question:Where in the water system is it installed?
    Answer(s):

    In most cases, the Iron Rival should be located AFTER the pump and pressure tank. Unless otherwise directed by your water treatment technician, the Iron Rival should be installed AFTER any backwashable turbidity/sediment filters, and BEFORE most other forms of treatment including cartridge filters, water softeners, carbon filters, and/or ultraviolet (UV) sterilizers, and the hot water heater, if applicable. When possible, it is also generally desirable to place the Iron Rival AFTER the plumbing branch off to your outdoor irrigation water unless you want this water treated.

    Question:Is it also a water softener??
    Answer(s):

    No, this system is designed to remove iron through oxidation and filtration. It is not a water softener. We carry both traditional water softeners, and salt-free hard water conditioners.

    Question:Can the backwash water be safely drained into a septic tank?
    Answer(s):

    For the large majority of the installs on our Iron Rival series of backwashing whole house systems, the backwash water is drained into the home's septic system. There is no real concern here from a water quality perspective on the discharge water (unless iron levels were very extreme in the well water). The larger concern with many homeowners is the volume of water that would be entering the septic field on a regular basis. Eg: for the 9x48 inch system with Filox media, the backwash flow rate is 6 GPM and the duration is 12 mins. So a backwash cycle results in 72 gallons of water headed to drain. And a BW can happen every 1, 2 or 3 days, depending on the iron content, home's water usage, etc. In most cases, this volume of drain water is still acceptable and the filter drain line is plumbed into a nearby drain pipe heading out to the septic tank/field. We have heard of people discharging their backwash water out onto the surface during warmer months and drained in winter months. Or some users will dig a large rock pit separate from their septic field and discharge the Iron Rival backwash water to its own drainage pit, but this isn't as common.

    Installation / Manuals

    We have designed our Iron Rival systems for ease of installation. We provide a bypass valve with each system. The bypass valve has male 1" NPT threaded fittings. If your pipe diameter is different, you can connect to the bypass with simple adapters available at any hardware store. The drain line connection is female 1/2" NPT for backwash flow rates up to 7 GPM, and female 3/4 NPT for backwash flow rates of 8+ GPM.

    The Iron Rival system is generally installed after the pressure tank or pressure booster if applicable but before all other water treatment equipment.

    We recommend that Iron Rival systems be installed by a licensed plumber, however, your warranty is valid as long as your system is installed in accordance with local plumbing codes and the Owner's Manual.
